The Divine Eye
from The Divine Eye: Seeing the Good in Everything and Everyone, March 24, 1995, Oasis Bookstore, Amherst, Massachusetts
The Divine Eye is an attribute of you. You have human eyes in all your bodies. Physically, you use the physical human eyes to see your physical form, to see your physical world. You have mental human eyes that see the mental world, that allow you to compute and think and process. You have emotional eyes that let you see what others are feeling. And you have spiritual eyes that show you the way to God in this life. And you have social eyes that see the world as your family.
But all these eyes are human eyes, dear ones. And as human eyes, they can be led astray. They can be fooled. Illusions can be very effective. This world, physically, is a most profound illusion. It is. Reality is a trick. It is apparent; reality is a lie. Only God is lasting and real. This [world of illusion] is false and meaningless. This is nothing but dirt. Is dirt even anything more than the faintest hint of a whisper of dust? Dirt and dust and chairs and people’s physical forms are nothing. But God, being limitless, is in everything, everywhere, forever.
And God has eyes as well. You are an exact replica of God in your abilities, but you are unaware of many of them. You see, God’s eyes see in a way your human eyes don’t. Your human eyes can be misled and fooled, but God’s eyes create the tomfoolery. You cannot trick the magician! And God, being everywhere, at all times and places, is in you right now. And the Divine Eye of God is in you right now. And the good that Eye sees is the Good in you; and the Good in others. And the Good the Eye sees is Good that your mind can’t even comprehend. Because all there is is Good. All there is is God. And all there is is Good.
There is an Eye in you right now; in every one of your bodies that is God’s eye. And if you are willing to give up your right to demand to see only with your human eye, you can see with God’s Eye. When you see with God’s Eye, you don’t have to try to see the Good. The God’s Eye only sees what is Real. And, therefore, only see what is Good.
It requires a great struggle within the Self to conquer the ego. The part of the self that says, “I’m as good as God.” “This is my life; I’m going to live it my way. I don’t need anyone’s help— especially God. God has got some nerve to put me here. I don’t like it, and I’m not going to like it.” This is the ego. It always says this.
Everyone has an ego, and everyone’s ego says this. So, don’t be ashamed of your ego. It’s just like your neighbors. Oh dear, we have crushed your ego! [the group laughs] Yes, your ego is no better than anyone else’s. No finer. No grander. No greater. No more able to conquer itself. You see when you think about conquering your ego, the first part of you that says, “I’ll do that,” is the ego. Let’s be honest, how much of your life do you really have any control over at all? Either your ego is running the show, or God is throwing thunderbolts. Where do you stand in all this?
