1000 Eternal Praises of God

Hi y’all, This piece is something Eon did at my request. I was making my way, singing a litany of the 1008 names of God that I found in India, and was struck with the question: why don’t I have something like this to sing in my own language?!

I’m sure there is an English-language iteration of something like this somewhere, but I asked Eon if he would create one for us. I use the melody for the 1008 names of God song, I learned in India. I have audio-recorded this several time to offer in Substack podcast form, but Substack has been having an issue with longer form recordings, so it wouldn’t upload. I will try again to get the melody out when I return from my vacation. It won’t be a seamless sonic production, but I hope to make a serviceable recording, so people can have a melody available to sing these Praises on their own or with others.

I appreciate that this must be a no-go for the devout atheist, but I found singing these Praises in my dark night of the soul period to be very effective for releasing anxiety and fear. Who knows, but it appears I may have moved out of my own dark night of the soul phase of spiritual life, but this litany is my old friend.

Belief or interest in a deity is not required to receive divine relief. I find atheism to be a very high demonstration of spirituality at the inquiring end of the atheist continuum. At the other end of the spectrum, in my mind, are the devout materialist atheists, who, understandably would not be reading this Substack, or be able to tolerate such singing. But there are many sincere agnostics and atheists in my life, who live expansive lives of open-minded inquiry, that is as, or more, rigorous and robust than some on a spiritual or religious quest. They might be able to at least listen to these Praises and get some unanticipated relief. God responds to sincerity. An open-minded atheist sincerity is as profound a form of genuine humility, as any other kind.

Human lives on this planet are noteworthy for an incredible ego death grip on the material plane, no matter how “spiritual” we are or aspire to be. Compunding this problem, is that this ego tyranny is largely unconscious and hides out in this world as “the norm.”

Unpacking, undoing and releasing this ego death grip is the task for spiritual practices. These practices are effective regardless of belief or intellectual stance. Consistent practice will gently loosen us from the ego’s agenda. This will not please the ego, but consistent spiritual practice will gradually persuade us that we are not the ego, and this ultimately frees our minds to return to their Source, if only for a moment. As I noted yesterday, this world was the result of our mind’s splitting off and separating away from the mind of God. Spiritual practice mends this injury; it heals this trauma. Spiritual practice dissolves the forgetting which marked our arrival in this world.

These Praises are great in that they are very comprehensive. One Praise will note one characteristic of God, and often the next will be the complete contradiction of that characteristic. Facing the paradox of God, is a Zen koan to relish in our minds. It loosens our presumptive grip and our adhesions to reality, and we receive a moment’s glimpse of Reality, or a sensation of peace that will cushion us from the harshness of this world. Consistent, disciplined practice can keep us in a sustained state of happiness. We can cultivate a reserve of serenity, and rely on its momentum.

God wants to be our friend. God wants us to enjoy our lives here, regardless of the ego’s agenda that we invest in its drama and misery. Spiritual practices are a divestment from this world. Our attempt to separate from God never succeeded. It was only illusion; it has been just a dream.

Spiritual practice can be the foundation for our gentle awakening. Our peace and light extends effortlessly to all our sisters and brothers and helps set humanity on a more sustainable course. All the great spiritual teachings and beings have this on offer for all who seek it.

Foreword

This litany of devotion, 1000 Praises of God, was written by Eon in only a few intensive sessions, after stating in a public talk that he would create it. It is similar in form to the various divine sahasranama, or recitations of the appearance and nature of God in the Hindu tradition. Unlike translations of scripture from sacred languages like Sanskrit, Arabic and ancient Hebrew, however, 1000 Praises of God was dictated by Eon directly into English. In this way, Eon continues his endeavor to give the English-speaking world spiritual tools for self-realization.

Instruction

A moving way to sing these praises is to begin the first line of each stanza on one note, then to sing the second line beginning on a slightly higher note, and the third line on the highest note, descending for the fourth and fifth lines, ending on the same note on which you began the stanza.

These praises may be joined at any time, sung entirely through, or in sections as the reader desires. They should be neither rushed nor dragged out. A devotional attitude will inspire the proper speed.

The full program of 1000 Praises should begin and end with the prayers and songs as shown. Eon has stated that this full program should be conducted once a week by those following this approach.
